On average, 7-week-old English bulldog puppies weigh about 5 or 7 pounds. Yet, Mathilda only weighed 13 ounces. She was so skinny that she did not even weigh a pound.
Mathilda is a full English bulldog that was born under the care of Jamie, a volunteer-worker at Road Dogs & Rescue. When she took the puppy home, she didn’t know whether the little one would be staying with them for quite a while or just a few days. Mathilda was so scrawny and sickly when she arrived at Jamie’s home.
“Because of how critical she was, we didn’t want to get our hopes up too high,” said Jamie. ‘Every morning we’d wake up and be like, ‘Is she still with us?’”
Despite not knowing how long Mathilda will be staying with them, Jamie made sure the teeny tiny pup felt loved every day. And while she didn’t look like she would actually survive, Mathilda started to show significant improvements. At 2 ½ months, she managed to stand and run like a normal puppy would.
Once Jamie noticed that Mathilda is stronger, she let her integrate with the older dogs, particularly Roo. She took cues from him, and he took her under his wings and turned her into the feisty sass that she is. As days passed, Mathilda became bolder, and she’s now unstoppable.
A few months later, Twinkie joined the pack. She has a pretty significant hydrocephalus, and Mathilda played a big part in her development. She taught her how to be a puppy and how to enjoy life.
When Jamie started conducting humane education at some elementary and high schools in the area, Mathilda was there. She’s a perfect ambassador. She doesn’t look like a regular bulldog, but she’s amazing, and she knows it.
“Dogs like Mathilda aren’t supposed to do a whole lot. But because they are loved and they were able to be just who they are, they just start shining.”
