It’s nice to think that for every particular stray dog, there is a perfect home just waiting for them. A lot of shelters and dog rescue organizations create promotions and events so that they can find the right matches. They hope that their rescue animals get the exposure and the chance to meet the right family for them.
But sometimes, that is not even enough. One dog in Kansas had to wait six years before he finally met his family. They had to put his face in a huge billboard ad to make it happen.
Merrick was merely a puppy when he was abandoned. By the time he was found, he had a deep abscess on his face and required surgery. After his treatment, he was brought to the Kansas City Humane Society. Little did anyone know that he would be calling the shelter his home for the next six years.
According to the shelter staff, Merrick is an active and playful pup. But because he was a strong and energetic dog, he couldn’t live in a house with kids. It was likely that he could get rough, and he would hurt them. He is not aggressive and won’t attack people, though, he is just vigorous.
He needed people that could keep up with his energy and provide him with a lot of attention. He was a special case, and this deterred a lot of people from adopting him.
The shelter, and its supporters, did many creative campaigns to find him that perfect home. But still, no one stepped up to give him a chance.
To ramp up his exposure, one of the shelter’s biggest supporters decided to shell out a lot of money to put Merrick in a billboard ad. He felt sorry for the dog and didn’t want to see him living in the shelter anymore.
And to their delight, the giant ad worked.
A couple saw the billboard and fell in love with Merrick. They got in touch with the shelter, and soon enough, they were signing the adoption papers. Everybody was happy to see that Merrick is finally going to his new home, and they stood outside the shelter to bid him goodbye.
The shelter staff shed tears when they saw him board his new owner’s car.
