Kelsey wanted to adopt a big dog, but she did not necessarily mean an overweight one. However, that did not stop Kelsey from adopting a massive Golden Retriever named Phil.

Kelsey admitted that she became instantly drawn to Phil’s happy smile as soon as she laid eyes on him. Phil’s goofy face became the reason why she quickly rescued him right after seeing him.

Kelsey recalled noticing that Phil had a little bit of trouble walking days after adopting him. Phil kept panting a lot, and he was always out of breath despite not doing many activities during the day.

Kelsey went to the vet to have Phil examined, and she was shocked when the doctor told her that he was 60 pounds overweight. It turns out that Phil’s previous owners free-fed him.

Phil frequently ate to his heart’s content because his previous family always made sure that his food bowl never went empty. Phil eventually ended up weighing 150 pounds due to being overfed.

Phil’s doctor wanted him to reach the 85 to 90-pound range, so he told Kelsey to always take him out for walks. Kelsey shared that she lived on the second floor and recalled that Phil had difficulty going up and down the stairs.

Kelsey recalled that she had to help Phil up and down the stairs for the first two weeks because he was having trouble with each step. Kelsey wanted Phil to get used to exercising, so she started by taking him for walks around the neighborhood every day.

Phil managed to walk around 10-15 steps during the first few weeks and often took a break right after that because he would pant a lot. Phil eventually lost 60 pounds, and it was all thanks to his new human mom, who never gave up on him.
