One of the best gifts that our pups can give us humans is their dedication. They are willing to submit themselves to a lifetime of service because of their unconditional love for us. Typically, these dogs serve as house pets, but for visually impaired individuals like Maria Colon, her dog is her partner.

Maria has a seeing-eye dog named Yolanda. The Philadelphia native, just like other visually impaired individuals, relies heavily on her pup. So despite Yolanda being proficient with serving Maria, she was given a tool that can help the pup do her job a lot better, a special phone that the pooch can use to call 911.

Yolanda is a very intelligent dog. She was trained to use the phone, and she had proven that she had retained the training she received when she used the phone three times. The first incident was when burglars broke into their home. Maria was fast asleep, and Yolanda heard the voices of some men downstairs. She dialed 911 on the phone and chased after the intruders.

Another episode is when Maria fell and became unconscious. Yolanda realized that something was wrong with her mom, so she called 911. Soon, emergency services were at their home, and they were able to give medical attention to Maria. The third instance was probably the worst of the three, as it involved their home being engulfed in flames.

Maria was asleep when the fire started. Yolanda alerted her mom to it and called 911 on that special phone. Maria was panicking, and there was too much smoke that she couldn’t breathe. Good thing, Yolanda was there to save the day again. She guided her mom outside the house and into safety.

It’s safe to say that because of Yolanda, Maria is still around today. This pup is indeed a hero dog; one that deserves more than just treats and medals, but the tender loving care that she receives from her mom. Hopefully, Yolanda will remind us how much a dog can affect our lives, and sometimes, even save it.
