Kelly Barnes has been working as a farmer for quite some time now. This is why she felt sad when she got diagnosed with fibromyalgia, which prevented her from doing what she does best. Fibromyalgia is a disorder that results in musculoskeletal pain. Fortunately, Kelly’s dog, Dugald, never left her side during this challenging moment.
After she learned that she had fibromyalgia, Kelly felt depressed. It was never-ending grief on her part because the condition prevents Kelly from doing what she previously excelled at. However, Dugald became a source of inspiration for Kelly to continue with her life.
Kelly admitted she had depressive moments, but it was her dog who reminded her about the beauty of life. In an interview, Kelly mentioned how the dog helped her survive her mental health struggles.
A few years after surviving her personal battles, Kelly is now helping other farmers in Victoria, Australia with their problems. With the help of Ian O’Connell, a dog trainer, Kelly founded Dunkeld’s Working Dog Training School (DWDTS).
Under DWDTS, dogs train and become therapy dogs to numerous farmers in Australia. According to Kelly, the farmers are not always comfortable speaking about their feelings and mental health situation. However, through Kelly’s influence and help, some are receiving the help that Kelly provides.
Kelly explained that through DWDTS, farmers could have a dog best friend whom they can be comfortable with sharing their feelings. The founder believes this is an excellent exercise for the farmer to be more open about their inner battles.
Since Dugald previously helped Kelly with her situation, the woman believes other dogs would also do the same to several farmers. Apart from the support of dogs, the farmers likewise receive training from DWDTS on the emerging trends in farming. Through this program, Kelly becomes a bridge for farmers to gain new knowledge on agriculture.
